Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder. It happens when there is a mixup during chromosomal reproduction. Normally we have 23 pairs of chromosomes. With Down Syndrome, there is an extra 21st chromosome, leading to the mental retardation and physical characteristics associated with the disorder.
Growing up, I babysat a lot for a family in my ward who have a son with Down Syndrome. He was the sweetest little baby and I loved taking care of him so his mom could go out and run errands, go grocery shopping, etc. Now he loves to give hugs, and laugh, and smile all the time.
There is a lady who banks with us. She comes in all the time with her son Rex who has Down Syndrome. He is always happy and smiling and laughing.
I once heard someone say that people with special needs are those spirits that the Lord couldn't bear not returning to him. I truly believe that. These special souls are so precious, so innocent, so pure; a gift from Heavenly Father to show us the way we should try to live our lives. Having a child like that, even though it means that the Lord considers you strong enough to take care of one of his chosen children, would be so difficult. I really admire those mothers and fathers that have children with special needs. How much patience and dilligence they must have, and what blessings they must receive in return.
I love those special spirits so much. Whenever I finally finish my degree and get my teaching credential, I've decided that I want to specialize in special education. I can't wait to teach those special spirits.
